Introduction

Pulse of Europe: Would Europeans welcome the UK rejoining the European Union? The latest Polling Europe survey, conducted in collaboration with OpinionWay Central Eastern Europe, clearly shows that support for such a scenario prevails among respondents across the EU countries surveyed.

Overall, 67% of respondents support the UK rejoining the European Union. This includes 31% who strongly support the idea and a further 36% who somewhat support it.

Poland among the countries with high levels of support

In Poland, support for the UK rejoining the EU is even higher, at 70%. This means that seven in ten Polish respondents view the possibility of the UK returning to the EU positively.

A similarly high level of support was recorded in Italy (77%). In Spain, 67% of respondents support the UK rejoining the EU.

The lowest levels of support were recorded in France (59%) and Germany (62%). Nevertheless, even in these countries, a majority of respondents support the possibility of the UK rejoining the European Union.

Most Europeans remain open to the UK returning to the EU

The findings show that Brexit has not closed the door on the possibility of the UK rejoining the European Union. Across all countries analysed, supporters of the UK returning to the EU represent a majority.

The highest level of support is observed in Southern Europe, where 74% of respondents favour such a scenario. Support stands at 67% in Central and Eastern Europe and 64% in Northern Europe.

At the same time, 19% of respondents across the total sample oppose the UK rejoining the EU, while 14% have no opinion on the matter.

The survey therefore highlights not only a relatively high level of support for the hypothetical return of the UK to the EU, but also interesting differences in attitudes across individual countries and regions of Europe.
